The Department for Transport (DfT) has recently confirmed that the Longer Semi-Trailer (LST) Trial is to be extended by additional 1,000 vehicles and a further 5 years. This will increase the number of LST’s from 1,800 to 2,800 over the next 12 months.

The trial extension was signed off by The Rt Hon John Hayes CBE MP, and allows operators to carry higher volumes of goods whilst meeting current regulations regarding maximum permitted weights and turning circles. This is great news for operators looking to capitalise on the cost-saving benefits of longer length semi-trailers.

Research commissioned by Risk Solutions on behalf of the DfT suggest that LST operational and environmental benefits are increasingly positive, with a potential 1 in 9 journeys saved by hauliers and CO2 emissions reduced by 3,000 tonnes over the ten year trial period.

Operators will soon be invited to bid on the additional allocations of LST’s, however the allocation criteria is yet to be decided. The number of LST’s permitted per operator will likely be similar to before, 20% of their standard sized fleet, or 180, whichever number is smaller. This allows operators of all sizes the chance to benefit from operating LST’s.
